Office Compost Program - FAQ
What goes in my compost bin?
When you green bin at work, you can put in the exact same items that you do while ‘green binning’ at home. These items include:
All food scraps, including tea bags, coffee grinds and filters
Paper products, including tissues, paper towels, napkins, microwave popcorn bags, paper plates - no coffee cups
No glass, metal or plastics
how often are bins picked up?
The Green Bins are picked up weekly or twice weekly by one of our Team Members and is replaced with a freshly sanitized Green Bin.
Where does my compost end up?
After we collect your office’s organic material, it enters the compost stream in one of three ways:
Donated to local neighbourhood garden compost piles
Sent to the Region’s Compost facility
Used at Kitchener Clean’s Worm Farm where it becomes worm castings
(a high grade fertilizer)
what kind of impact has the program had?
It may not seem like it, but even small businesses and offices can generate a lot of waste. For example, an Office Compost Program Member and a client of Kitchener Clean with a staff team of only 20-25 generated over 600 pounds of organic waste in a single year! Another Program Member has generated 4707.3 pounds of organic waste in a single year — the equivalent of more than 4 cars taken off of the road.
Unfortunately, when food and organic waste end up in a landfill instead of being properly composted, they generate a great deal of methane. This is a harmful and highly potent greenhouse gas that has a lasting impact on our environment.
However, if all businesses were to divert organic waste using programs such as our Office Compost Program, we would significantly reduce the amount of methane released from landfills!
